Words of wisdom from Chaos female leaders: Leadership lessons for the future of technology

Thu, 5th Mar 2026

In today's technology landscape, leadership is being tested in new ways. As organisations and workforce expectations evolve, modern leadership requires openness to innovation, emotional intelligence, and the courage to grow and start again.

Across Chaos, female leaders are sharing how these shifts are playing out in their own leadership journeys. Their reflections illustrate how the current landscape is raising the bar for leadership capability.

Defining Success on Your Own Terms

For Iveta Cabajova, Chief Executive Officer, leadership is rooted in clarity and perspective.

"Reflecting on my journey, I have gained absolute clarity about what success means to me: achieving a balance between family life and my career. I am unapologetically ambitious in my professional endeavors, and I no longer view ambition as something to be ashamed of. Instead, I embrace it proudly, alongside my curiosity, grit, resilience, and humility - and even the self-doubt and imposter syndrome many of us experience."

Her approach to leadership embraces both strength and vulnerability.

"I am committed to learning every day, working hard, and accepting both criticism and small-scale failure. However, I refuse to accept the notion that I cannot succeed. As the saying goes, 'Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right.' This mindset has worked for me many times."

Leadership with Purpose & Empathy

For Eva Makedonska, Chief Human Resources Officer, leadership begins with intention. In an industry where speed often dominates; it's not about the loudest voice, but about contributing to something meaningful.

"Participate with purpose. Contribute when you have something meaningful to add. Make sure your presence always creates value.

"Engage in activities with a clear intention and sense of purpose. When you choose to participate, strive to bring valuable insights or contributions that enhance the discussion or project at hand. Always aim to ensure that your involvement leaves an impact, enriching the experience for both yourself and others around you."

For Makedonska, empathy is becoming a defining leadership strength - one that the next generation of leaders is already embracing.

"The next generation of leaders is maturing with a heightened sense of thoughtfulness and empathy - qualities that are essential in today's complex world."

Finding and Trusting Your Voice

Fast-growth environments demand confidence, testing new and experienced leaders alike. Melanie Riebel, Chief Marketing Officer, reflects on the importance of support networks and self-trust when entering a new workspace.

"Surround yourself with people who believe in your potential and stay close to them. Mentors don't have to look like you; they should be the ones who help you grow. The most influential individuals in my journey so far have been those who challenged me, broadened my perspective, opened doors, and advocated for me in rooms I wasn't yet in."

Yet support alone is not enough. Leadership also requires personal conviction and a mindset shift:

"One of the biggest lessons I've learned is to trust my own voice. As a young leader, I often felt tempted to hold back my perspective and defer to those with more experience in the room. However, over time, I realised that I was in that same room for a reason."

Normalising Ambition

Amy Senew, Chief Revenue Officer, challenges the notion that women's ambition is a sign of being "bossy" or "emotional".

"Gender is not the only factor that defines who we are, but it plays a significant role in shaping how our leadership, ambition, and voices are perceived. It also influences how we express ourselves. Women's ambition should be celebrated and normalized, rather than downplayed or diminished."

Senew teaches us that ambition does not need to be diluted, to be accepted. You can be exceptional. Your perspective is not incidental; it is earned.

The Power of Non-Linear Growth

Innovation rarely follows a straight path, and neither do careers. For Monica Nelson, Researcher, diverse experience is an advantage in shaping effective leadership.

"My career has never been a straight line, but I've learned that every detour expands your perspective in ways you can't anticipate. The empathy I've built from working across different industries and experiences is honestly the skill I draw on most - and I think it's one of the most undervalued things a person can bring to any room."

Resilience as Momentum

Diana Goncheva, Program Manager, offers a final reflection that captures the spirit of innovation itself:

"Never give up! A closed door today means at least two opportunities tomorrow."

No one begins their career as a leader; leadership is built over time, through setbacks and successes. A closed door is not proof you do not belong; it is often a necessary redirection, which moves you closer to where you are meant to lead.

Growing Into Leadership

For new and seasoned tech leaders, these reflections offer a reminder: no leader begins fully formed. Capability is built in moments of doubt, in rooms where you choose to speak, and in doors that redirect rather than open. The future of technology leadership will belong to those willing to grow into it.
